Can't come to New Zealand and not visit a glacier. Stayed at another hostel, in a bunk room. These have a double bed with a single bunk above, a pair of single bunk beds, and a single stand alone bed. Actually cheaper than a double room?! Pay extra for a bed roll of sheets and duvet.
Still, clean and tidy with hot showers and a communal kitchen. We get a the whole room to ourselves.
So, walked to the head of the Fox Glacier. As you approach you can feel the icy wind blowing down the valley. It is a steep climb for the last 800 metres. Mike is now convinced that this is a training regime for things to come.
The last 400 metres are even steeper at about 30° incline, any more and we will need crampons. There are sign's every 20 metres or so saying 'no stopping' due to the danger of rock falls coming down the cliff face. Think this is a Kiwi joke. Mike uses the poles holding up these sign's to rest on, lol...
So after the glacier we go on a couple of km hike for the fun of it.
Not a lot to say about the place.
Tomorrow off to Wanaka to visit the most photographed tree in New Zealand.
Leave you with some photos.. The flattish part, at the snout, Yvonne looking for gold (or shiny things), Mike having a rest on a steep but, Yvonne at the top.
